Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing that dates back to around 100BC.

The fundamental principal is based on the free flowing Qi. Through the stagnating of this life-energy we become ill, feel pain and develop disease.  When unobstructed we experience health and harmony.

Using a holistic approach, acupuncture places the individual at the centre rather than looking at individual symptoms.

By treating the whole individual, acupuncture aims to find the root cause and by treating this, you may find balance is restored in more areas than you had initial set out to resolve.

What will my treatment look like?

Acupuncture involves the gentle, shallow insertion of fine, sterile, single-use needles. These are placed on specific points along the body and may be left for around 20 - 30 minutes. This stimulate the flow of Qi along these pathways.

In addition to these I may use additional therapeutic techniques listed below:

Chinese cupping: using glass cups placed on the skin, a vacuum or suction creates upward force on the skin.

Moxibustion: through the use of Moxa which are cone like or stick shaped ground mugwort creates a warmth on points along the body.

Tui-Na: releases muscle tension and stimulates the flow of Qi through the body.

What can I expect to feel?

If you are being treated by a qualified practitioner you should feel deeply relaxed after you treatment. You may feel sleepy or tired and should plan this into your day and any activities that you may wish to do after your treatment. It is important that you allow your body to rest after your treatment.

Side-effects are very rare in acupuncture but any dizziness, minor bruising (after cupping) or dull ache around acupuncture points are self-correcting.

How may treatments will it take?

Depending on the complaint of the client and the course of treatment that has been suggested, one treatment a week for 8 weeks. This will be reviewed on a regular basis as the treatment plan progresses and depending on the initial state of health the client is in.

Clients report better sleep, reduced stress and better overall rhythm. Maintenance appointments once a month are the end goal.
